For Immediate Release                         Contact: Dianne Sherwood, Exec. Director

A New Look for the Port of Klickitat and Bingen Lake Area

The Bingen marina and Port of Klickitat access road looks a little greener after last week’s planting efforts. The Port of Klickitat has initiated its first phase of entryway improvements, which will include a walking path along Lakeview Blvd., north of Bingen Lake. The entryway Landscape Plan was designed by CIDA, Inc. of Portland, Oregon in May of 2001. Planning for the initial phase of improvements began in late November of last year, but really began to take shape in January 2002 and is almost complete.

Before the path could even be established, the Port had to clean-up the area of existing debris material and control the overpopulation of blackberries. In conjunction with the Port, the project was coordinated by Alexis Cefaratti and Steve Stampfli from Underwood Conservation District.

Local companies were contracted to assist in this project including Rabanco, George Mersereau, Inc., Richter Landscape and Pilot Knob Construction, Inc. Local businesses and individuals donated time, labor and equipment, including tree augers to dig the planting holes with an assist by the Klickitat County PUD.

Two local crews were responsible for the volunteer tree planting efforts along the newly graded trail; the Northwest Service Academy Americorps volunteers from Trout Lake and the Washington Conservation Corps Fire Crew from Goldendale. These crews planted, staked and secured 116 trees and 40 seedlings last week, in a matter of 1 ½ days. The tree species planted along the walking trail are Ponderosa Pine, Douglas Fir, Marshall Seedless Ash, and Red Oak, obtained from Alpine Nursery. The tree seedlings were donated from the Underwood Conservation District.

Final touches to the project include a drip irrigation system, bark mulch to assist with moisture retention, and tree and weed maintenance by the Port of Klickitat’s grounds-keeper, Ron Lethco. Future improvements will include an improved surface for the path, and an extension of the walking trail. The new walking path is intended to provide a safer pedestrian traffic route to the Bingen Marina and Sailboard Park, and to provide a new look for the Bingen Pt. Business Park area.
