Before serving as a commissioner, Orie worked for the Wyers and Kreps Stage Company providing livery service, mail transport, and drayage. He later hauled logs for the Swan Haman Log Company, transported apples and lumber, and worked for the Columbia Fruit Union. When the latter became the Wyers Trading Company, he managed it for several years before purchasing it in 1939 and running it until his retirement in 1972. He also served for several years on the White Salmon City Council. Orie passed away on October 9, 1987, at age 90.
During his tenure, the "Bingen West" properties were sold, property in the area now known as Bingen Point was acquired, 39 acres north of Bingen Harbor were sold to Mt. Adams Forest Products and 32 acres were acquired from the Mt. Adams Loggers Association, dikes forming the west side of Bingen Harbor and the southwest corner of the Port's property at Bingen Point were built, a channel to the Columbia River was opened (creating Bingen Harbor), various properties were acquired to support establishment of the Dallesport Industrial Park, Marina Park was developed, the 102 Kreps (aka RAMCo) and 101 Parallel (aka Dalles Cherry Growers) buildings were built, the Dow Chemical project was launched and abandoned, the rail spur, and water reservoir at Dallesport were constructed, a second well was drilled at Dallesport, construction began on the Dock Road railroad overpass and barge dock at Dallesport, and the Recycled Aluminum Metals Company (RAMCo) began operating.
